Digital printing is defined as a modern printing method that makes use of electronic data for producing prints.

Usually, digital prints are produced on laser transfer paper. However, these prints can be taken on any surface that may suit a particular requirement and the relevant equipment needed for taking that print.

For example, if there is a graphic designer who seeks to create a piece of art, and then prints it on a material that they like. They can do it easily with the help of digital printing.

The digital printing phenomenon is regarded as fresh and innovative because it is a break from traditional printing methods. The old printing required lithography, press, plates, and flexography, etc. The method itself was very tedious and time consuming with manual input at every level.

Digital printing has discarded the use of printing plates altogether. There is no need to strip the printed pages together manually. Color proofs and films are gone too.

In the article below, the digital printing phenomenon, and how it has managed to change the entire printing outlook is discussed.

The Mechanics of Digital printing

There are several steps involved in digital printing. Therefore all these steps are discussed one by one to have a better understanding of their benefits.

In the very first step of digital printing, an image is sent to the printing equipment digitally. The image could be in any format like PSD, JPEG, and PDF. These are generally the most widely used formats, but there can be many other formats that can be used for this purpose.

Most digital printing experts are of the opinion that it works much better when the commands for printing are not huge. The quality of the image being sent to the printer also holds great technical value.

Digital printing does not require any pre-press preparations, which were the hallmark of traditional printing. Digital printing has also done away with several time-consuming and rather cumbersome procedures that were part of the old printing procedure. There is no need for any chemicals or films anymore.

Stages of Digital Printing.

There are several stages of digital printing that must be followed in the sequential order for getting the best results and making sure that the entire procedure is carried out smoothly without encountering any issues.

As discussed earlier, the image file from which you will be printing the final product is very important. It must be a very sharp, crisp, and clean image. There must be no blurring or distorting in the image. Otherwise, the same will be magnified manifolds.

The size of the final print matters the most. You must make sure that the resolution of the image being sent to the printing equipment is good enough to support the final required size of the print.

At this stage, there is another technicality that needs to be addressed. Crop marks are crucial because, in their absence, the final print can have pointed edges that will require extra care at the end. Therefore, it is better to add crop marks so that the entire image is printed within clearly defined borders.

Imposition is the next step in printing. In short, the imposition procedure ensures that the maximum space on the printing object (usually paper) is used.

This is required to decrease the number of paper which will be eventually wasted during and after printing. The imposition procedure also improves the efficiency of the entire production procedure.

The next step is the conversion of the image. Whatever you are trying to print needs to be converted before being sent to the printer or printing equipment. The electronic documents file must be converted into GIF, JPEG, and BMP formats. These are commonly known as raster files.

However, some software will also allow direct printing from PDF files. But the compatibility of the software needs to be checked before sending the print command.

The Benefits of Digital Printing

The Digital printing concept offers many benefits.

First of all, the consistency of these prints is maximum. Second, they offer an image quality that is much better than traditional prints.

There are no harsh lines in the final print. The colors in a digital print are perfect. Another beneficial aspect of digital printing is that the quality of the print does not diminish with each subsequent print. It is assuring to see that every print taken out through a digital printing method is as good as the previous one.

One area where digital printing takes primacy over traditional printing is the speed with which these prints are executed. The enhanced printing speed is the result of fewer steps involved in digital printing, which makes sure that the final print is delivered at a much faster speed when compared to traditional printing.

Another great advantage of digital printing is the cost-effectiveness of the entire procedure. Since digital printing does not require printing plates, it reduces the overall cost of printing since these plates used to cost a lot of money in many instances.

This means that the amount to be invested in getting a single digital printing job is much less than the traditional printing set up.

It is considered as the most viable and cost-effective method available for printing for any print. If you don’t have a significant amount of budget for printing, you will be glad to know that digital printing is not only viable, it is also extremely affordable.

Digital printing can be used for printing any marketing material or any other product, including branding material, business cards, brochures, and just about anything else.

The Final Word

Digital printing has ushered in a revolution in the printing industry, which needed it the most at this time.

Compared to conventional printing methods, digital printing is not only swift, easy, and flexible, but it is also highly cost-effective.

The tedious and time taking manual procedures exposed the final print to many risks. Several prints needed to be discarded because they were either not up to the requirements or simply failed to meet the client’s expectations.

Digital printing has made it possible to review the final product on-screen before sending the print command. This helps you ensure that the final product will be exactly as the one you see on your screens.

Digital printing has offered an opportunity to provide clients with the best printing solution at the most competitive price within the short deadlines provide by them.

Digital printing is highly recommended for any printing, whether it is a low-scale private job or a high-scale commercial undertaking.
