Personal Area Network (PAN)

In terms of size, PAN networks have become the optimal choice for homes and small businesses. With the use of a wireless modem, a PAN allows computers and compatible smart devices for wireless control.

PANs are excellent for having centralizing a building’s use of its gadgets through a single control device.

Campus Area Network (CAN)

A campus area network is slightly more significant in terms of coverage of a PAN but a little under the range of a MAN.

Their connections spread throughout multiple buildings so that different departments and facilities can share a network connection along with data and resources.

Universities primarily use CAN to house information and services such as student help desks, class information, files, and schedules, and the like.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A metropolitan area network is similar to a campus area network(CAN) in terms of its range. MANs make use of fiber optic cables powerful enough for remote nodes to communicate as if they were a LAN network.

With the combination of switches and routers, a complex system of interconnected devices is made, fit for large companies or local government offices.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Unlike a standard LAN, a wide area network allows the connection of a significantly longer distance crossing national to international coverage.

The most basic example of a WAN is the internet itself. It is built through a remote connection of devices through a large trickling-down effect of routers and internet service providers.

Virtual Private Network(VPN)

With the worry over internet privacy, virtual private networks make a viable alternative to increase personal data security.

A VPN allows a point-to-point connection to access a private network remotely. Its users’ most popular usage of this feature is in accessing region-locked content, apps, and websites that are unavailable to the user’s current location.
