Diving right in, let us look at how to configure a router for BSNL internet (which requires a modem) and Fibrenet (which doesn’t need a modem) which is listed a little further down.

Seting up your  Router with your  ADSL internet (Landline based internet):

Here the router takes the internet from the Modem and shares it wirelessly. Now let us see how to configure the Router so you can access the web easily.

Things you will need before starting:

  1. Your new router
  2. The user manual of the router (This will have all the passwords you will need)
  3. Your existing modem
  4. The Modem login username and password (The details will be with your service provider)
  5. 1x Ethernet cable
  6. A computer or Laptop or Phone with Wi-Fi

Steps to follow to connect to the internet:

  1. First place the Modem & Router at the particular place you desire. WE strongly recommend a central location so that the wifi network is distributed all around and none of it is lost.
  2. Make sure the Modem is already connected with a cable from your telephone (This cable is responsible for providing the internet connection to your modem)
  3. Now take the Ethernet cable & connect it from one LAN port (There will be 2-4 unused ports) in your Modem to the WAN port (Will be labelled or of a different color) in your Router. This step ensure that the internet from the modem will now be shared to the router.
  4. Now simply turn on the modem & router. They will take a minute to initialise and you will see different led lights to indicate that the internet connection is being shared with the router.
  5. Now turn on the Wi-fi in one of your devices. You will see the name of your router there. Click on it. Next you must choose on of the three steps that pertain to your router.
  6. a) Some routers will ask you the password which is printed on the user manual or at the back of the router. Type it in (This is your Wifi password) and you are connected to the internet. (Mostly Netgear & Tp-Link routers). However, we highly recommend changing your initial password to prevent security mishaps.
  7. b) A few routers will connect to the wi-fi network without asking a password, but will insist you to change it instantly (Tenda & Xiaomi routers).
  8. c) For some Routers, your BSNL username/ password will be asked, type it in if asked. (For some Netgear modem-routers)
  9. You are now connected to the internet

Note: If you have a Router with built in Modem just insert the cable from the Telephone  and turn on the Router. You will not need an Ethernet cable unless you want to connect it to a PC with the cable.

Seting up your router to directly connect with the internet without modem (Fibernet):

Setting up your router directly thorugh the internet is a much easier task than connecting it thourgh a modem.

Here are the list of things you will require to setup and connect to the internet without a modem:

  1. Your new router
  2. The user manual of the router (This will have all the passwords you will need)
  3. A computer or Laptop or Phone with Wi-Fi

Steps to follow to connect to the internet:

  1. First place the Router at the particular place you desire. Again, we highly recommend a central location to maximise coverage.
  2. Connect the internet cable to your Router’s WAN port (Will be labelled or of a different color)
  3. Now turn on the Wi-fi in your smart phone or laptop. You will see the name of your router there. Click on it. Now you must execute any of the following steps as it pertains to your case.
  4. a) Some routers will ask you the password which is printed on the user manual or at the back of the router. Type it in (This is your Wifi password) and you are connected to the internet. (Mostly Netgear & Tp-Link routers)
  5. b) A few routers will connect to the wi-fi network without asking a password, but will insist you to change it instantly (Tenda & Xiaomi routers)
  6. You are now connected to the internet

Configuring the Router once connected:

Once connected to the internet you may want to access certain settings or features in the router. For this we need to access the router’s settings screen.

  1. Go to your web browser once your are connected to the router.
  2. Type: 192.168.0.1 (For Tenda, Tp-Link, D-Link routers) or for Xiaomi routers you have to visit miwifi.com and for Netgear routers, you can visit routerlogin.net.
  3. Type in the username & password (Will be mentioned in the user manual and most of the time it is is admin and password).
  4. Your can now configure various aspects of your router’s, change passwords, setup Qos etc.
  5. Some routers come with an app for your smartphone that lets you configure the router settings without the need of a Computer. This is very convenient.

All it takes is are a few simple steps to connect and configure a router (or modem-router). Most rotuers today come with easy to understand user manuals that list the steps, password etc. in a simple to understand manner with pictures given to further help the consumer. We hope we have been of help. Happy browsing!
